School Swimming Pool AHU Replacement
The Challenge: Replacing An AHU System In A Live Pool Environment.
A swimming pool facility required the replacement of an outdated fresh air and heating system, which had been in operation for over 30 years. The primary objective was to improve air movement across the entire pool area, enhancing ventilation, air quality, and temperature control.
Our team was tasked with designing and installing a modern air handling solution while minimising disruption to the facility’s operations.
Replacing an air handling system in a live pool environment presented several unique challenges:
- Maintaining Pool Integrity – The water was to remain in the pool throughout the installation process.
- Minimising Disruption – The facility needed to limit downtime and ensure a quick turnaround.
- Complex Installation at Height – Installing a fabric air sock across the full length of the pool required a secure and innovative approach to ensure precision and safety.
The Solution
Our expert team developed an installation plan to ensure a smooth and efficient upgrade:
Custom Air Handling System for Optimal Ventilation
- A new air handling unit (AHU) was specifically designed, commissioned and installed to suit the pool environment, ensuring optimal temperature and humidity control.
Fabric Air Sock Installation for Even Air Distribution
- A new fabric air sock was installed, running the full length of the pool, to ensure uniform air movement across the space.
- This design eliminates stale air pockets, creating a more comfortable and regulated environment.
Full Ductwork Replacement and Coating for Longevity
- The existing ducting was removed and new ducting installed, designed to optimize airflow efficiency.
- All ducting was internally painted to prevent contamination buildup, enhancing system longevity and maintaining air quality.
Strategic Installation Approach to Minimise Disruption
- To keep the water in the pool and complete the project efficiently, a scaffold platform was built across the pool’s surface.
- A mobile tower was placed on the platform, allowing our team to install the air sock at high level without risking damage to the pool or facility.
- The entire project was completed in just 10 days, minimising facility downtime and allowing the pool to reopen quickly.
The Results
The new system has transformed the swimming pool environment, delivering key benefits:
- Improved Airflow and Comfort – Even distribution of air eliminates stagnant zones, improving overall air circulation.
- Energy Efficiency – The modern air handling system reduces energy consumption while maintaining optimal temperature and humidity levels.
- Reduced Maintenance Requirements – With internally coated ducting and a tailored air sock design, the system remains cleaner for longer, reducing maintenance efforts.
- Minimal Disruption to Operations – The strategic 10-day installation plan ensured rapid completion, allowing the facility to resume operations with minimal downtime.
